Our Mission
ShelfList was created with a simple belief: managing your grocery lists shouldn't require sacrificing your privacy. In a world where most apps collect and monetize your data, we wanted to build something different—an app that works entirely for you, not for advertisers or data brokers.
Why We Built ShelfList
We noticed that most grocery list apps require accounts, internet connections, and collect extensive data about your shopping habits. We asked ourselves: why does a simple grocery list need to know so much about you?
The answer is: it doesn't. So we built ShelfList to be:
- 100% Offline: No internet required, ever
- Zero Data Collection: We don't collect, store, or transmit any of your data
- Simple & Fast: Just the features you need, without the bloat
- Privacy-First: Your lists are yours alone
Our Values
Privacy is a Right
We believe privacy is a fundamental human right, not a premium feature. That's why ShelfList collects zero data and works completely offline. Your grocery lists reveal a lot about your life, and that information should stay with you.
Simplicity Over Features
We focus on doing a few things really well rather than cramming in every possible feature. ShelfList helps you create lists, track items, and manage your pantry—nothing more, nothing less.
Transparency
We're committed to being transparent about how our app works. Our privacy policy is written in plain language, and we're open about our technical choices and limitations.
User Control
Your data is stored on your device, giving you complete control. Delete a list, and it's gone. Uninstall the app, and all data is removed. No hidden copies, no cloud backups without your consent.
The Technology
ShelfList is built with React Native, a modern framework that allows us to create native mobile experiences for both iOS and Android. We use SQLite for local data storage—a proven, reliable database that runs entirely on your device.
We deliberately chose not to integrate any third-party analytics, crash reporting, or advertising SDKs. This means:
- No tracking pixels or analytics scripts
- No advertising IDs or device fingerprinting
- No network requests to external servers
- No dependencies on cloud services
Open Source Commitment
We believe in transparency and community. While ShelfList is currently a private project, we're committed to eventually open-sourcing the codebase so anyone can verify our privacy claims and contribute to making the app better.
What We Don't Do
It's important to be clear about what ShelfList doesn't do:
- No Accounts: We don't require registration or login
- No Cloud Sync: We don't sync your data across devices (though this may come as an optional, privacy-preserving feature)
- No Social Features: We don't have social sharing or friend lists
- No Ads: We will never show advertisements
- No Data Selling: We don't collect data, so there's nothing to sell
Future Plans
We're constantly working to improve ShelfList while maintaining our privacy-first approach. Some features we're exploring:
- Optional end-to-end encrypted cloud sync
- List sharing with privacy controls
- Recipe integration
- Barcode scanning for quick item entry
- Smart suggestions based on your shopping patterns (processed locally, of course)
All future features will be designed with the same privacy-first philosophy.
