Getting Started
How do I create a new grocery list?
Tap the + button on the home screen, enter a name for your list (e.g., "Weekly Groceries"), and tap "Create". Your new list will appear on the home screen.
How do I add items to my list?
Tap on any grocery list to open it, then tap "Add Item" at the bottom. Enter the item name and tap "Add". The item will be added to your list immediately.
How do I mark items as bought?
Simply tap the checkbox next to any item to mark it as bought. Tap again to uncheck it.
Managing Lists
How do I delete a list?
Long-press (tap and hold) on any list from the home screen. A confirmation dialog will appear asking if you want to delete the list and all its items.
Can I rename a list?
Currently, you cannot rename lists. You can delete the old list and create a new one with the desired name. We're working on adding this feature in a future update.
How do I delete an item from a list?
Long-press on any item within a list to delete it. A confirmation will appear before the item is removed.
Pantry Management
How do I add items to my pantry?
Navigate to the "Pantry" tab at the bottom of the screen, tap "Add Item", enter the item name and optional quantity, then tap "Add".
Can I track quantities in my pantry?
Yes! When adding or editing pantry items, you can enter a quantity (e.g., "2 cans", "500g", "1 box"). This helps you keep track of what you have at home.
Data & Privacy
Is my data safe?
Absolutely! All your data is stored locally on your device using SQLite. We never send your data to any servers or third parties. See our Privacy Policy for more details.
Does the app work offline?
Yes! ShelfList is designed to work 100% offline. You don't need an internet connection to use any features of the app.
How do I back up my data?
Your data is automatically included in your device's backup system:
- iOS: Enable iCloud backup in Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → iCloud Backup
- Android: Enable backup in Settings → System → Backup
What happens if I uninstall the app?
Uninstalling the app will delete all your local data (lists, items, pantry inventory). Make sure to back up your device before uninstalling if you want to preserve your data.
Troubleshooting
The app is crashing or not responding
Try these steps:
- Force close the app and reopen it
- Restart your device
- Make sure you have the latest version of the app installed

My lists are not showing up
This is rare but can happen if there's a database issue. Try:
- Closing and reopening the app
- Restarting your device
- If you recently restored from a backup, make sure the backup completed successfully
The app is running slowly
ShelfList is designed to be fast, but performance can be affected by:
- Very large lists (hundreds of items)
- Low device storage
- Older devices with limited RAM
Try deleting old or completed lists to improve performance.
